The Bible Speaks

19. The Nature of Man

When a person dies, he or she rests unconscious in the grave. They cease to exist and have nothing more to do with anything on the earth until Jesus comes again.

01. Where did human life begin?
Genesis 2:7
Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

02. When the breath of God is taken from the body, what is the result?
James 2:26

Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

03. What was the first lie the serpent in the tree told Eve?
Genesis 3:4-5

4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

Note 1
When Satan told the lie "you wont die" what did he mean by "die"? The serpent in this verse is making a clear distinction between the truth of what happens when we die (being asleep in the dust), and the attractive lie he has been promoting to mankind ever since (than on death, man goes straight to heaven).

04. What did God say would happen if man was disobedient and ate of the tree?
Genesis 2:15-17

15 The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.
16 But the LORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden--
17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

05. What did God mean when He said "you are sure to die"?
Genesis 3:19

By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”

06. What does Job say happens the body when we die?
Job 4:7

Stop and think! Do the innocent die? When have the upright been destroyed?

07. Can we ever reappear before our family and friends after we die?
Job 7:9,10

9 Just as a cloud dissipates and vanishes, those who die will not come back.
10 They are gone forever from their home - never to be seen again.

08. Where does Job say our human life comes from?
Job 27:3

As long as I live, while I have breath from God...

09. (Part 1) Do those who have died have any further interaction with the living?
Psalms 115:17

The dead cannot sing praises to the LORD, for they have gone into the silence of the grave.

10. (Part 2) Do those who have died have any further interaction with the living?
Ecclesiastes 9:10, 5, 6

10 Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.
5 The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered.
6 Whatever they did in their lifetime—loving, hating, envying--is all long gone. They no longer play a part in anything here on earth.

11. Does the Bible tell us what class of people is subject to death?
Ezekiel 18:20

The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behaviour, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.

12. Once a person has passed away, will they remain in an unconscious sleep forevermore?
John 5:25-28

25 And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.
26
The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son.
27
And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man.
28
Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son,

13. How did Jesus explain the death of Lazarus?
John 11:11-14

11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”
12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!”
13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
14 So he told them plainly,
Lazarus is dead".

14. Was Lazarus really dead?
John 11:17, 39

17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
39
“Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

15. What did the Apostle Peter say about the death of King David?
Acts 2:29, 34

29 Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.
34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honour at my right hand ...

16. (Part 1) What will happen to the righteous dead at the second coming of Jesus?
1 Thessalonians 4:16,17

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves.
17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.

17. (Part 2) What will happen to the righteous dead at the second coming of Jesus?
1 Corinthians 15:51, 52

51 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed!
52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

18. What type of transformation will happen to our bodies at the second coming of Jesus?
1 Corinthians 15:53, 54

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (NKJV)

19. So who is the only one that possesses immortality within Himself?
1 Timothy 6:16

He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.

Concluding Question
At the moment humans die we fall asleep, and all conscious thought ceases. The ability to make a decision for Jesus is lost. Wouldn't you like to accept Jesus today, right now and lose your fear of death and be assured of life everlasting?
