17. The Sabbath

The fourth commandment of God's law spells out God's requirements regarding the Sabbath day.

01. What does the fourth commandment say regarding the Sabbath?
Exodus 20:8-11
8 Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.

02. What is one special characteristic of the Sabbath Day?
Matthew 12:8
For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!
Note 1
If the Sabbath day is a "day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God" (Exodus 20:10), and Jesus said He was Lord even over the Sabbath, then this day must be very important to Jesus. Jesus is using the Sabbath to underscore His own Divinity (and connecting it with humanity by stating "the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:8)).

03. How did Jesus regard the Sabbath when He walked on earth?
Luke 4:16
When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.

04. How does Jesus regard the Sabbath in our day?
Luke 4:16
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

05. When was the Sabbath instituted on Earth?
Genesis 2:1-3
1 So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.
2 On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.
3 And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.

06. Was this Sabbath instituted on Earth for the Jews only?
Mark 2:27
Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath."

07. (Part 1) Does the Bible reveal to us which day of the week is the Seventh day?
Revelation 1:10
It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshipping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast.
Note 1
This text tells us that John was worshipping God on the "Lords Day" but does not specify which day this was. So which day is the Sabbath or the Lord's Day? The answer becomes clear by referencing other texts of Scripture.

08. (Part 2) Does the Bible reveal to us which day of the week is the Seventh day?
Mark 15:42
This [Jesus' crucifixion] all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath ...
Note 1
Jesus was crucified on the preparation day which in Jewish terminology is Friday, the day before the Sabbath.

09. (Part 3) Does the Bible reveal to us which day of the week is the Seventh day?
Mark 16:1-2
1 Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body.
2 Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb.

10. (Part 4) Does the Bible reveal to us which day of the week is the Seventh day?
Luke 23:54, 56
54 This [Jesus' crucifixion] was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation, as the Sabbath was about to begin.
56 Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.

Note 1
Some christian denominations today will try to tell us that the law of God was nailed to the cross and is no longer applicable. If that is the case, why did the women rest "as required by the law" in Luke 23:56?

11. What are the hours by which the Sabbath should be observed?
Leviticus 23:32
This will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and on that day you must deny yourselves. This day of rest will begin at sundown on the ninth day of the month and extend until sundown on the tenth day.

12. (Part 1) Does God still expect us to keep the Sabbath, even after the cross?
Luke 23:56
Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.

13. (Part 2) Does God still expect us to keep the Sabbath, even after the cross?
Matthew 24:20
And pray that your flight will not be in winter or on the Sabbath.

14. (Part 3) Does God still expect us to keep the Sabbath, even after the cross?
Revelation 12:17
And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus.
Note 1
The Bible is clear that the Law of God remains after the cross, so the Sabbath command must remain as well.

15. For what other purpose did God create the Sabbath day?

Exodus 31:13
Tell the people of Israel: ‘Be careful to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you from generation to generation. It is given so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.
Ezekiel 20:12
And I gave them my Sabbath days of rest as a sign between them and me. It was to remind them that I am the LORD, who had set them apart to be holy.
Ezekiel 20:20
and keep my Sabbath days holy, for they are a sign to remind you that I am the LORD your God.

16. For how long will the Sabbath day remain holy?
Isaiah 66:22,23
22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, "So shall your descendants and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.
