The Bible Speaks
13. The 2,300 Day Prophecy
Fulfilled prophecy is God's answer to those who do not believe. The 2,300 day prophecy was written by Daniel 700 years before Jesus birth and predicts with unerring accuracy the coming of the redeemer and the beginning of the 'time of the end'.
01. Did Jesus have confidence in Daniel as a prophet?
Matthew 24:15
“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),
02. Where in Daniel is the 2,300 day prophecy written about?
Daniel 8:12-14
12 The army of heaven was restrained from responding to this rebellion. So the daily sacrifice was halted, and truth was overthrown. The horn succeeded in everything it did.
13 Then I [Daniel] heard two holy ones talking to each other. One of them asked, “How long will the events of this vision last? How long will the rebellion that causes desecration stop the daily sacrifices? How long will the Temple and heaven’s army be trampled on?”
14 The other replied, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the Temple will be made right again.”
Note 1
The events that occur during the 2,300 days is written about in greater detail in Daniel 2, 7-9.
03. Does the angel Gabriel give Daniel more understanding about this prophecy?
Daniel 8:16-17
16 And I heard a human voice calling out from the Ulai River, “Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of his vision.”
17 As Gabriel approached the place where I was standing, I became so terrified that I fell with my face to the ground. “Son of man,” he said, “you must understand that the events you have seen in your vision relate to the time of the end.”
04. How long is a prophetic 'day'? 2,300 days is only 6 1/2 years and that does not reach to the "time of the end"?
Ezekiel 4:6, Numbers 14:34
4:6 After that, turn over and lie on your right side for 40 days—one day for each year of Judah’s sin.
14:34 “ ‘Because your men explored the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years—a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. Then you will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.’
Note 1
In biblical prophecy, God uses one day to represent one year. Numbers 14:34 is also an example of this principle. Therefore, the day-for-a-year principle is also applied to this prophecy of Daniel. Of this there is no doubt, when we see the accuracy of its fulfilment. Therefore, the 2,300 days = 2,300 years, and the 70 weeks = 490 years – the 490 years being the first portion of the 2,300 years.
05. What was Daniels response to the angel's explanation found in Daniel 8:16-17?
Daniel 8:26-27
26 “And the vision of the evenings and mornings Which was told is true; therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to many days in the future.”
27 And I, Daniel, fainted and was sick for days; afterward I arose and went about the king’s business. I was astonished by the vision, but no one understood it.
Note 1
The angel was successful in explaining everything to Daniel about the visions in chapters 7 and 8 EXCEPT for the vision regarding the 2,300 days! Daniel took sick and the angel needed to delay his explanation.
06. Did Daniel finally receive an explanation of the 2,300 day prophecy?
Daniel 9:21-23
21 As I was praying, Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice.
22 He explained to me, “Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding.
23 The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.
Note 1
Which vision was Gabriel talking about in verse 23? Daniel had not received any new visions for many years and the only vision left unexplained was the vision relating to the 2,300 days in Daniel 8:14.
07. What was the first revelation Gabriel gave Daniel regarding the 2,300 day prophecy?
Daniel 9:24
24 “A period of seventy sets of seven [weeks] has been decreed ["Cut Off" (NKJV)] for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
Note 1
Seventy weeks of the 2,300 days are for Daniel’s people – the Jews. God was giving them seventy weeks to repent and demonstrate their faithfulness. This seventy weeks, or (490 years) was embedded inside the greater prophecy of the 2,300 days. Both the 490 years and the 2,300 day prophecies started at the same time.
08. Now for the big question: Did the angel reveal when this 2,300 days (years) was to begin?
Daniel 9:25
25 “Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street shall be built again, and the wall,
Even in troublesome times. (NKJV)
Note 1
The prophecy begins when the decree to restore AND rebuild Jerusalem is passed. This decree was given by Artexerxes, King of Persia in 457 B.C. It is recorded in Ezra 7 and Ezra 6:14. The year 457 B.C. is also an established historical date.
The 7 weeks and 62 weeks equal 483 prophetic days or 483 years. This means, counting ahead 483 years from 457 B.C. we are brought to the time of the Messiah, i.e. Jesus Christ. The date comes to 27 A.D.
Note 2
457(B.C.) + 483(A.D.) = 27 A.D.
09. Did anything significant happen to reveal "Messiah the Prince" in 27A.D.?
Matthew 3:15-16
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. (NKJV)
Note 1
At the baptism of Jesus, He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. He was indeed the anointed one – the Messiah. This took place at the beginning of His ministry, A.D. 27 – right on time according to the prophecy. This prediction was made almost 500 years before it was fulfilled with amazing accuracy.
10. What was the second revelation Gabriel gave Daniel regarding the 2,300 day prophecy?
Daniel 9:26-27
26 “And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”
Note 1
After A.D. 27 Jesus would be “cut off” or killed. The prophecy of the 490 years has accounted for 483 years so far, up to 27 A.D. Now verse 27 mentions the last week (i.e. 7 years). In these last 7 years, the Jews are given final opportunity to repent and consecrate themselves to God. However, we notice that the Messiah is cut off in the middle of the 7 years, that is 3½ years after A.D. 27. This brings us to A.D. 31 – the exact year Jesus was crucified. The prophecy is accurately fulfilled once more. Daniel also said in this verse that Jesus would cause the sacrifices to cease. He did this when He died as the One great Sacrifice for sins.
11. What did Jesus death on the cross in A.D. 31 mean for the sanctuary services?
Matthew 27:50-51
50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit.
51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,
11. What event marked the end of the 'seventy weeks' (Daniel 9:24)?
Acts 7:58-60; 8:1
7:58 and dragged him [Stephen] out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.
7:59 As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
7:60 He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.
8:1 Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen. A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria.
Note 1
This event precipitated a new gospel expansion:
1. Exclusive labour for the Jews ceases
2. Savage persecution of Christian believers commences
3. Apostles are scattered into Gentile territory (Acts 1:8)
4. Samaritans and Ethiopians are converted (Acts 8)
5. The Jewish nation is no longer God's chosen nation, but individual Jewish believers can still accept the Gospel and be saved.
12. If the 490 yrs prophecy started in 457 B.C. and both the 490 and 2,300 years prophecies start at the same time, when does the 2,300 day prophecy finish?
Daniel 9:24-25
24 “Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy.
25 “Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street shall be built again, and the wall,
Even in troublesome times. (NKJV)
Note 1
457 B.C. + 2,300 = 1844
(457 B.C. + 490) + 1810 = 1844
12. Did any significant event occur in 1844 to mark the end of the 2,300 days?
Daniel 8:14
And he said to me, “For two thousand three hundred days; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.”
Note 1
The Cleansing of the Sanctuary is a large topic and will be saved for a future bible study in this series.
