The Bible Speaks
10. Earth Made New
After the 1,000 years following the second coming of Jesus, the prophet John in the book of Revelation describes a re-created heaven and earth where sin has been completely removed. In that place there will be no more old age, sickness, pain, or tears. And God's people will live through the ceaseless ages of eternity in the very presence of the One who redeemed them from the earth.
01. What does the Bible say the new earth will be like after the final destruction of sin and death?
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
02. How does John describe the New Jerusalem, the Holy City?
Revelation 21:9-21
9 Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
10 So he took me in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.
11 It shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal.
12 The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.
13 There were three gates on each side—east, north, south, and west.
14 The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
16 When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles.
17 Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel).
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
19 The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones: the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,
20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.
21 The twelve gates were made of pearls—each gate from a single pearl! And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass.
03. What will this city be like? Will we recognise anything familiar in the heavenly city?
Isaiah 65:25
The wolf and the lamb will feed together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. But the snakes will eat dust. In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain. I, the LORD, have spoken!”
Isaiah 65:21
In those days people will live in the houses they build and eat the fruit of their own vineyards.
Isaiah 65:22
Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains.
Luke 24:16,31, 1 Corinthians 13:12
16 But God kept them from recognizing him.
31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (NKJV)
Note 1
In heaven we shall know and recognise our friends and family, just as Jesus was recognised by His disciples after His resurrection.
Isaiah 11:6-8
6 In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.
7 The cow will graze near the bear. The cub and the calf will lie down together. The lion will eat hay like a cow.
8 The baby will play safely near the hole of a cobra. Yes, a little child will put its hand in a nest of deadly snakes without harm.
Isaiah 35:5-6
5 And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf.
6 The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland.
04. Will there be a temple in this city?
Revelation 21:22
I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
Note 1
The temple on earth was an earthly representation of the presence of God. When we are reunited in heaven with God there will no longer be a need for a temple because God will be with us in person!
05. How will light be provided for the city?
Revelation 21:23
And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
06. Will there ever be darkness in the city?
Revelation 21:24
Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there.
07. What flows from the throne of God in the new city?
Revelation 22:1
Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
08. What kind of people will not be found in the Holy City?
Revelation 21:7-8, 27; 22:14-16
7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.
8 “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
27 Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life.
15 Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”
09. What does Jesus assure us about the description we are given regarding the Holy City?
Revelation 22:6
Then the angel said to me, “Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon.”
10. Of what important thing does Jesus remind us in Revelation?
Revelation 22:7
“Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book.”
11. When does Jesus say the things revealed in Revelation will happen?
Revelation 22:10
Then he instructed me, “Do not seal up the prophetic words in this book, for the time is near.
12. What does Jesus promise about the reward of the righteous and His coming?
Revelation 22:12
“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds."
Conclusion
In view of the fact that Jesus has gone to such extreme lengths to ensure that you can understand the events of the past and the future, and you have an opportunity to choose which for life or for death, what is stopping you from accepting Jesus Christ as your personal saviour today, right now?
