Jesus revealed to His disciples what signs to look for leading up to His second coming.

01. What prompted Jesus to share with His disciples what will be happening in the world just before His second coming?
Matthew 24:3
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?”

Matthew 24:36
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.

Matthew 24:32-33
32 “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.
33 In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door.

​04. How serious was Jesus about what He was telling His disciples?
Luke 21:28
So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”

​05. What was the first sign that Jesus told His disciples about?
Matthew 24:29
“Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken."
Note 1 - the "anguish of those days":
During the Dark Ages the Bible was banned Christians were oppressed and were it not for the grace of God, both would have been extinguished from the earth. Millions died as martyrs for the Christian faith. This 'dark ages' tribulation was to come to an end and was marked by the darkening of the sun.
Note 2 - "the sun will be darkened and the moon will give no light":
On May 19, 1780 across north America the sun was mysteriously darkened. It was not an eclipse. In fact, no conclusive scientific explanation for the event has been given to this day. Neither did the moon shine that night. Many thought the judgement day had come.
Note 3 - "the stars will fall from the sky":
On November 13, 1833 the greatest meteoric shower ever seen occurred. More than 200,000 shooting stars fell each hour for six hours. Many had read the stars would fall and fully believed after seeing this miraculous sign the end of the world had indeed arrived.

​06. What was the second sign that Jesus told His disciples about?
Matthew 24:14
And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.
Note 1
The commission given to the Christian church was to take the message of Christ to the whole world. Most of the world has been reached in some way or another through various medium: Bibles, preaching, literature, radio, TV, Internet, Social Media etc. When this reaching of the whole world is accomplished, Jesus will come again.

​07. What was the third sign that Jesus told His disciples about?
Matthew 24:12
Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

Our world is in a state of moral collapse. The crime rate grows at more than ten times the population growth. Immorality of the worst kind is seen in the world today, and is becoming more widespread. Purity in life is becoming a rare commodity, and is ridiculed by those controlled by their lusts. As we see iniquity abound, it is a sure sign that Jesus is coming soon.

Luke 21:11
There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven.
Note 1 - Earthquakes
The great Lisbon earthquake is believed to be a direct fulfillment of this prophecy.
At one time earthquake centers were pinpointed, now they can occur anywhere and at anytime. Destructive earthquakes are multiplying year by year (see the below image from the US geological survey), suggesting that this sign of great earthquakes is fulfilling just as Jesus said.

Note 2 - Famines
The world population is multiplying at a fantastic rate. More than 190,000 people everyday, and it is increasing. Already our planet is overcrowded. How can these extra mouths be fed? Even now, most of the world goes to bed hungry each night. The fact is, they cannot be fed – we must face mass starvation. When famines occur, which they do frequently, just as Jesus said, then the tragedy is even greater.
Note 3 - Pestilences (disease)
Pestilence has increased in the plant and animal world, and among mankind. Insect pests are a constant concern for the man on the land. New strains of virus are developing year by year, many are resistant to some antibiotics. It is a constant battle to keep ahead.

​09. What was the fifth sign that Jesus told His disciples about?
Luke 21:25-26
25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.
26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

​10. What was the sixth sign that Jesus told His disciples about?
Matthew 24:6-7
6 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately.
7 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world.

James 5:3-4,8
3 Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgement.
4 For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
8 You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.

2 Peter 3:3-4
3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.
4 They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”

​12. What will life on the earth be like when Jesus returns?
Matthew 24:37-39
37 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day.
38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat.
39 People didn’t realise what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.
Note 1
As a sideline, note that Jesus Himself believed in the physical, literal nature of the story of Noah and therefore the worldwide flood!

​13. What will the minds of wicked men be like leading up to Jesus return?
2 Timothy 3:1-5
1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.
5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

These verses are a description of people who consider themselves to be religious, church attending Christians!

​14. What other signs will there be regarding the state of living near Jesus return?
Daniel 12:4
But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase.

Mark 13:29
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door.
